Business and Scientific Uses for Data Mining Systems
Data mining is the process of extracting patterns of data out of a database or data warehouse and collecting or summarizing it into usable information. Both the scientific and the business communities have been able to put data mining procedures to good use because the system can analyze subject behavior and help you draw strong conclusions based on the patterns it sees.
For example, if customers on a website continue to view a certain movie genre, then the system would be able to analyze that behavior and make recommendations based on it. In the scientific world, observed behavior must be properly logged in the database, but these observations could take place over many years. A data mining process, however, can help them discern behavioral patterns they may not have noticed on their own.
